  • What do you mean by "True" Custom Shirts?

    • Although there are many custom shirt makers worldwide, only a handful employ the highly specialized techniques required to make a "true" custom shirt. Only true custom shirt makers like RH Newell use a precise dress shirt measurement technique to create a completely unique paper pattern from scratch based on the client's measurements. Then we hand cut the pattern with a knife for greater precision. RH Newell's Master Pattern Makers have been designing these one-of-a-kind patterns for decades. The vast majority of custom shirt makers, including virtually all the major European men's fashion houses, ignore this precise, time consuming step. Instead they choose from among a few standard pattern templates and make minor adjustments to approximate the client's dimensions. The result is a shirt that is a less than perfect fit. Of those few remaining custom shirt makers that do create a unique pattern for each client, most use computer-aided-design (CAD) systems to create the pattern. These CAD systems, though efficient, fail to capture the subtle nuances in the client's body that RH Newell's Master Pattern Makers understand intuitively from spending years learning to interpret our 11 precision measurements. We use no pre-designed shirt measurement diagram because we know that no 2 men are shaped the same. There is no substitute for this highly personal level of service. There is no better fit than an RH Newell custom shirt.

  • Why should I care whether my custom shirt maker creates a unique pattern for me?

    • Everyone's body is comprised of unique proportions and dimensions. As just one example, most men's left arms are 1/4"or 1/2" (or more) longer or shorter than their right arms. Yet most custom shirt makers fail to measure both arms. RH Newell's Master Pattern Makers know how to translate our 11 precision measurements and other physical data into a pattern that creates a shirt that is a true custom fit. The client is paying a premium price and is entitled to expect a truly excellent product. RH Newell maintains clients' patterns on file for at least 10 years between orders.

  • What else does RH Newell do to assure a perfect, true custom fit?

    • When fitting a new client for the first time, we insist on creating a "fit-check" shirt. We send the shirt to the client to get his feedback to see if any changes are necessary before we fill the balance of their order. If an existing client has gained or lost more than 10 pounds since their last order, we recommend doing a new fit-check shirt to verify the fit. We also pre-shrink all of our fabrics so that the fit is not unduly affected by future laundering.

  • What do your custom shirts cost?

    • Please use our on-line Store Locator to find the RH Newell retailer nearest you. They will be happy to show you our catalog and discuss fabric selection and pricing. Generally speaking, our shirts retail in the $275 to $600 range. Clients outside the US or those not served by a local retailer can call us directly for pricing at 1-800-249-0146.

  • Why are RH Newell true custom shirts so expensive?

    • Creating custom tailored shirts using old world craftsmanship is a labor intensive and costly process. Many hours of effort by our master cutters and sewing artisans go into making each shirt a work of art. Our fabrics are the finest available, selected from the premier mills in the world, principally in Switzerland and Italy. Our quality control and client services are the best in the industry. Yet our shirts are priced comparably to the couture and bespoke custom shirts offered by European designers and others that incorporate less hand craftsmanship, lower-grade construction (what the apparel industry calls the "make") and a less than perfect fit, when compared to RH Newell shirts.

  • Where will my shirts be made?

    • All RH Newell shirts are handcrafted and hand made (hand-made) in our production facility in Medina, New York, a small farming community in northwestern New York State, near Lake Ontario. We've been based here for over 100 years. Many of our sewing artisans are second, third, and fourth generation RH Newell colleagues.

  • What styles of shirts do you offer?

    • We offer custom-fitted men's dress shirts, sport shirts, tuxedo shirts, full dress shirts, monogrammed dress shirts, Egyptian cotton shirts, Sea Island cotton shirts, custom linen shirts, men's luxury dress shirts, formal shirts, and western and equestrian shirt styles, in traditional and contemporary designs. We like to give our clients' creativity free reign in designing shirts that are uniquely theirs. Toward that end, in addition to our standard array of choices, we feature a variety of specialized collar, cuff and pocket designs that are fashion-forward, to help spur clients' creativity. Contrasting fabrics can be used on collars, cuffs, box front, lining, etc. to achieve a one-of-a-kind design that is your personal fashion statement. We will do our very best to fulfill any and all requests.

  • Does RH Newell offer a guarantee?

    • We offer all clients a guarantee that we will resolve any problems or issues caused by us to their satisfaction or we will refund the purchase price of their shirt in full.

  • Is there a minimum order?

    • No, there is no minimum order. A new customer who orders just one custom shirt will also be charged a $12.50 pattern charge. This charge is waived for initial orders of two or more shirts.

  • Can I see your catalog on-line?

  • How many fabrics do you have to choose from?

    • Our collection consists of over 250 fabrics in a variety of weaves, colors, patterns, thread counts and price ranges. Collections are updated every six months, with our Spring/Summer collection sent to our stores in January, and the Fall/Winter collection in our stores in July. Our selection of weaves includes: Cambridge and Pin Point Oxford, End on End, Broadcloth, Twill and Royal Oxford. We also offer Picque and Batiste weaves for formal shirts. Additional cotton and linen weaves are regularly being added to our collections. Most weaves are available in a variety of fibers, thread counts and price ranges. RH Newell will also gladly fill requests for special fabrics not in our current collection. Just call us at 1-800-249-0146 and tell us what you're looking for.

  • What is thread count and why does it matter?

    • Thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. Thread count is one of several factors that affect the quality of a fabric. Higher thread counts generally equate to a softer, more durable fabric. Most RH Newell shirts have thread counts between 110 and 160, but we also offer super-premium fabrics with thread counts in the 170 to 200+ range. In addition to thread count, the length of the fiber used to make the fabric and the fabric finish have an impact on the quality, comfort and durability of the finished shirt. For example, some cotton fibers such as Egyptian, Pima (from Peru and the Southwestern US) and the luxurious Sea Island cottons from the West Indies are long-fiber cottons that provide greater durability and produce long-lasting garments of the highest quality and superior feel. RH Newell offers these as well as other fine cotton and linen fabrics for our custom shirts.
